7 Mile “Safe Zone” Created Around Fight Island
The UFC will officially debut on Fight Island this weekend with UFC 251, which is headlined by UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman defending the gold against Jorge Masvidal.
A total of four events are going to be held on Fight Island, with all four of those cards taking place during the coronavirus pandemic.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a seven mile “safe zone” was created around Fight Island, with that zone being accessible to UFC staff, fighters and others involved with the events. It was also revealed that anyone entering the Flash Forum, which is where the fights will be held at, will walk through a mist tunnel that will kill 99% of surface germs.
“Over the past two weeks, we’ve been very busy building a safe and secure zone to bring UFC back to Abu Dhabi and, in turn, kickstart international sport and entertainment events again,” stated Ali Al Shaiba in a press release obtained by MMA Junkie, executive director of tourism and marketing for DCT Abu Dhabi. “The area of the ‘safe zone’ aims to ensure we can provide a secure environment to host elite sport, but also protect our wider Abu Dhabi community. This event is important to us for many reasons as it allows us to begin the process of bringing back sports and tourism to Abu Dhabi. It signals our readiness to once again host international events and provides us with a learning opportunity to improve and adapt, and efficiently prepare for the scheduled events ahead of us this year.”
Fight Island action kicks of this weekend with UFC 251 and ends on Saturday, July 25 with UFC Fight Night: Whittaker vs. Till.
