Zou Shiming Hopeful That He’ll Fight Again, Won’t Retire Due To Eye Injuries Yet

Zou Shiming's recent troubles has not stopped the former world champion from announcing his retirement.

Shiming suffered terrible eye injuries a couple of months ago in the midst of a potential legal battle with his former agent who claimed that Shiming owed millions of dollars. Xinhua News Agency reported that Shiming will continue to work hard with doctors to give himself the best chance to fight again. Shiming, a popular boxing figure in his native China, was voted in as a member of the Executive Committee of the Chinese Boxing Federation on February 7.

"I'm cooperating with doctors to get some treatment, and I will never give up. If my body allows it, I think I can fight in the ring, I have accepted the advice of medical experts on my recovery, and I can do some things for Chinese boxing as an Executive Committee member." Shiming said according to Xinhua.

Shiming’s wife Ran Yingying revealed a couple of months ago that the former Olympic gold medalist's condition was caused by broken bones in and around his eye socket, in a recurrence of a similar injury he suffered in 2014. The injury occurred when Shiming suffered a detached retina during a flight from Shanghai to Beijing on December 23 and has reportedly lost sight in one eye.

Shiming won the WBO flyweight title back in late 2016, but lost the title to Sho Kimura in his first title defense last July. Shiming is 9-2 as a boxer and has been boxing professionally since 2013.
