Zolani Tete vs. Omar Narvaez Rescheduled For April 21

Omar Narvaez's opportunity to fight for the WBO bantamweight title will happen in April.

After Narvaez's WBO bantamweight title challenge against Zolani Tete, set for February 10, was postponed due to Tete suffering a calf injury, promoter Frank Warren had been trying to reschedule the bout. The title fight will take place on April 21 on the undercard of Carl Frampton vs. Nonito Donaire in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The original fight between Tete and Narvaez was supposed to headline a Copper Box Arena card. With the injury, Narvaez took a fight in Argentina on February 3 against Jesus Vargas to stay busy while Tete recovers. Narvaez easily won the fight against Narvaez.

Queensbury Promotions' Frank Warren confirmed the news and admitted that the plan is to eventually have Tete fight current WBA bantamweight champion Ryan Burnett. Burnett used to hold the IBF title as well until he vacated the belt on February 12 when he elected to defend his WBA title on the Anthony Joshua vs. Joseph Parker undercard.

“Perhaps when Zolani keeps dominating headlines in Burnett's areas that will convince him to finally come on board,” Warren said.

Tete made headlines last year when he set a new world record for the fastest world championship when he knocked out compatriot Siboniso Gonya in 11 seconds. Tete is a former super flyweight world champion and has held at least the interim WBO bantamweight title since last April.
