Yuriorkis Gamboa Ready To Face Gervonta Davis After Rocky Martinez Fight

While Gervonta Davis is getting ready to fight Ricardo Nunez on July 27, Yuriorkis Gamboa is looking to get a fight against the WBA super featherweight champion next.

Right before Davis defends his WBA title in a homecoming fight on Showtime, Gamboa will face Rocky Martinez in the co-main event bout. A fight between two former world champions could have some ramifications in regards to a potential world title opportunity, especially for Gamboa.

The Cuban fighter, who once held the unified WBA and IBF featherweight champion, was at one point considered the favorite to land a fight against Davis this weekend, but that was until the WBA enforced a mandatory order on Davis to face Nunez. A win over Martinez could potentially entice Davis to pursue a fight against Gamboa next, given how there are plans in place for Davis to fight again in the fall if he beats Nunez. No matter who the opponent is, Gamboa said in a media workout that he’s ready to face anyone from super featherweight to lightweight.

“After I win this fight, I am ready for anyone at 130 or 135 pounds. Gervonta Davis is a very good fighter and has done a fantastic job in his campaign as a 130-pound champion. If Gervonta happens to be the next fight, let’s throw hands and see what happens,” Gamboa said.

In regards to a potential fight against Davis, Gamboa believes he’ll have a size advantage against Davis as opposed to the last time he had a world title fight, which was against the much-bigger Terence Crawford in 2014. Crawford went on to stop Gamboa in the ninth round to retain the WBO lightweight title, but since then, the former featherweight champion had gone on to win six of his last seven, including a win over Miguel Beltran Jr. last November.

“Unlike my fight with Terrence Crawford at 135 pounds, I feel like I would be the bigger man in the ring against Gervonta. A win versus Martinez is a wonderful opportunity and I will not let it go to waste as it will catapult me to much bigger fights, which my fans deserve,” Davis said.

Davis vs. Nunez for the WBA “Super” super featherweight title will headline the July 27 Showtime Championship Boxing card from the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore.
