WBO Sets Purse Bid Date For Vic Saludar vs. Wilfredo Mendez For Minimumweight Title

The WBO has issued a purse bid date for a minimumweight world title fight.

The sanctioning body announced that titleholder Vic Saludar and mandatory challenger Wilfredo Mendez will have a purse bid on June 27 in the WBO offices in San Juan, Puerto Rico. While the minimum bid will be $80,000 and Saludar will receive the majority of the winning bid, the actual split varies depending on a couple of factors.

If the fight is held in the champion’s home nation, which in this case is the Philippines, then the split would be 75-25 in favor of the champion. Should the fight take place in any other country, the split is 80-20 in favor if the champion.

Saludar has held the WBO title since July 2018 when he defeated Ryuya Yamanaka by unanimous decision in Japan. The Filipino champion’s lone title defense took place earlier this year, also in Japan, when he won a wide 12-round decision against Masataka Taniguchi. The 28-year-old Saludar is currently on a five-fight win streak.

Mendez is a 22-year-old boxer from Puerto Rico who has won his last four fights and is coming off a split decision win against Janiel Rivera back on May 24. Mendez is looking to become the third Puerto Rican boxer in history to win a minimumweight world title after Alex Sanchez and Ivan Calderon had previously held the WBO title as well.
