WBC President: Canelo Alvarez Should Not Be Guilty Of Doping
Ever since Canelo Alvarez tested positive for traces of clenbuterol, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has been one of the biggest defenders of Alvarez and has now detailed his belief that Alvarez should not be guilty of doping.
In an article he wrote for World Boxing News, Sulaiman explained the reasons why he believes Alvarez did not intentionally cheat and believes him when Alvarez blamed tainted meat for the positive tests. Sulaiman wrote the clenbuterol levels are in line with one who consumes contaminated meat and that past cases of boxers testing positive for clenbuterol didn’t warrant the potential suspension that Alvarez could be facing.
Canelo, specifically and exclusively to this case, may be considered guilty of negligence and ignorance and was careless in his nutrition regime. However, with all the facts and information available to analyze this case, he cannot be found guilty of doping.
Sulaiman also highlighted the issue of meat being contaminated in Mexico where food regulations are not as strict in the United States where clenbuterol is illegal.
Alvarez tested positive for traces of clenbuterol on two different tests in February and his upcoming May 5 middleweight title rematch against unified WBA, WBC and IBF champion Gennady Golovkin has been canceled. The Nevada State Athletic Commission has temporarily suspended Alvarez and will decide whether or not he will continue being suspended in the commission’s meeting on April 18.
Golovkin has requested for a change in venue in Las Vegas to fight in case the fight against Alvarez falls through and the commission will look at Golovkin’s request on April 5.
