WBC Orders Chocolatito vs. Sor Rungvisai Rematch, Interim Super Flyweight Title Bout

Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez’s first professional loss shocked the boxing world, but now he’ll have a chance to redeem himself.

The former WBC super flyweight champion’s loss to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai on March 18 came as a major surprise when it was announced that Sor Rungvisai defeated Gonzalez via majority decision (113-113, 114-113, 114-113). Many boxing media outlets, including Fightful had Gonzalez winning (Fightful had Gonzalez winning the fight 116-110).

The WBC not only ordered an immediate rematch between the two fighters, but also scheduled an interim super flyweight championship bout between Carlos Cuadras, who was supposed to go up against the winner of the March 18 fight, and current WBC Silver super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada. Estrada lost to Gonzalez back in 2012 for the WBA light flyweight title.

In an official ruling by the governing body, the winners of the rematch between Gonzalez and Sor Rungvisai and of the fight between Cuadras and Estrada will go up against each other in a WBC unification bout.

The WBC Board of Governors considers that due to the extraordinary fight, which was extremely close and considering that the WBC championship rules regarding accidental head butts were not used, but most importantly, considering a public demand to witness once again a great match between these 2 great fighters, the WBC has granted the request by unanimous vote to order the rematch between Sor Rungvisai and Gonzalez.

The WBC convention ruling had ordered the winner of march 18 to fight Carlos Cuadras and considering that the rematch will not take place in some time due to the medical suspension of both fighters, the WBC is ordering an interim championship between the two highest available contenders, Carlos Cuadras vs. Juan Francisco Estrada.

Gonzalez, Cuadras and Sor Rungvisai all fought on March 18 on the undercard of the Gennady Golovkin vs. Daniel Jacobs fight card at Madison Square Garden. Cuadras fought right before the WBC super flyweight title bout and defeated David Carmona via unanimous decision.
