WBC Light Flyweight Champion Ganigan Lopez Suffers Injury, Withdraws From Title Fight
Just as quickly the rematch between WBC light flyweight champion Ganigan Lopez and Pedro Guevara was announced, it was called off.
Lopez suffered a calf injury and had to withdraw from the October 25 rematch between the two, according to Promociones del Pueblo. The fight was set to be competed in Guevara's hometown of Mazatlan, Mexico
Promociones del Pueblo announced the injury on September 28, but said the show will go on. While the main event will no longer have the much anticipated title fight, Guevara will still get to fight in front of his hometown fans.
He will instead take on replacement opponent Jerry Tomogdan, a 22-year-old southpaw from the Philippines who is currently on a two-fight win streak. He unsuccessfully challenged Wanheng Menayothin for a strawweight world title in Thailand last year, but suffered a knockout loss in the 9th round of that fight.
The last time both men met in the ring, Guevara was the 108-pound champion and defeated Lopez via unanimous decision last year. Guevara, however, then lost the title to Yu Kimura in his next fight and Kimura himself lost the title to Lopez, who has held the title ever since. Lopez defended his title with a unanimous decision victory against Jonathan Taconing back in July of this year.
Guevara was a former WBC Silver Light Flyweight Champion and NABF Light Flyweight Champion. Lopez is a former WBC International Light Flyweight Champion. It is expected that when Lopez recovers from his injury, the rematch will scheduled at a later date.
