WBA Light Heavyweight Champion Nathan Cleverly Close To Fighting Badou Jack On Mayweather-McGregor Card
Badou Jack may soon be getting his light heavyweight title match at the Mayweather vs. McGregor card after all.
According to reports, WBA light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly is trying to forgo his mandatory title defense and fight Jack on the Mayweather vs. McGregor card.
Promoter Eddie Hearn said there is a deal in place to make the fight, which has been long-rumored, happen, but have to deal with the fact that the WBA has ordered Cleverly to defend his title against mandatory challenger Dmitry Bivol.
“We agreed terms for Nathan Cleverly to defend his world title against Badou Jack on the Mayweather undercard. The only issue we have to overcome is we’re just boxing off with [Dmitry] Bivol, who is the mandatory in the WBA, to make sure the belt can be on the line. The deal is done and now we have to make sure that the fight can take place for the WBA world title,” Hearn said.
Showtime did say that the undercard was set a few weeks back, despite the rumor that Cleverly vs. Jack was still in the works with less than three weeks remaining for the card.
As of now, there is still no announcement as to what the exact details of the undercard will be. According to reports confirmed to Fightful, Gervonta Davis will defend his IBF junior lightweight title against Roman Martinez as the pay-per-view co-feature and Shawn Porter will fight Thomas Dulorme on a FOX-televised prelims broadcast.
