Viktor Postol Injured, Julius Indongo To Take His Place In Interim WBC Title Fight
An injury to Viktor Postol has opened the door for another former junior welterweight world champion to immediately get back to the world title scene.
It was announced that Postol suffered an injury, reported by ESPN that it was a fractured thumb, and will not compete in the interim WBC junior welterweight title fight against Regis Prograis on March 9. In his place, former unified junior welterweight world champion Julius Indongo will fight Prograis in a fight that will be televised on Showtime.
The winner of the fight not only will win the interim WBC title, but also get a chance to fight for the full world title. The interim champion will face the winner of the Jose Ramirez vs. Amir Imam fight on March 17 for the WBC title at Madison Square Garden. That fight will be televised on ESPN.
Indongo held the WBA and IBF titles and fought Terence Crawford to unify Indongo’s titles with Crawford’s WBC and WBO titles. Crawford knocked out Crawford in less than three rounds to become the first ever undisputed junior welterweight champion to hold four major titles at the same time. Indongo had been preparing for a comeback fight in New York, but with Postol’s injury, Indongo jumped in to fight for another world title.
Prograis, the NABF junior welterweight champion, will be fighting in his first world title fight. Prograis has won all 20 of his pro fights, with 17 of those wins coming by knockout.
The co-main event of the March 9 Showtime card is an IBF junior welterweight eliminator title between Ivan Baranchyk and Anthony Yigit.
