Vasiliy Lomachenko Still Wants To Fight Mikey Garcia
Vasiliy Lomachenko is still interested in having a lightweight superfight against Mikey Garcia even after Garcia’s loss in March.
Even though Lomachenko is currently focusing on defending his WBA and WBO lightweight titles against Anthony Crolla, Lomachenko was asked during a media workout on his thoughts regarding a matchup against Garcia. Garcia is coming off a lopsided 12-round decision loss to IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. in Garcia’s 147-pound debut. Although Garcia’s stock may have dropped with the loss to Spence, Lomachenko still wants to fight Garcia someday.
“I still want that fight, 100 percent, but it is up to Mikey. Can he cut the weight? I don’t know. But if he can make 135, I want to fight,” Lomachenko said.
Of course, part of why Lomachenko wants to fight Garcia is because Garcia still owns the WBC lightweight title. Lomachenko is to unify the entire 135-pound division which requires fighting Garcia. Garcia’s time as the WBC champion, however, could be done depending on what the governing body decides in the coming days.
“My goal is to unify all the titles. If it’s {IBF champion Richard} Commey later this year, that would be a great fight. Any champion, I would want to fight. I want IBF and WBC belts. I want to go down in history as a great champion,” Lomachenko said.
But for the moment, Lomachenko must get past Crolla before thinking of any big fights down the road. The two will fight on April 12 in Los Angeles in the main event of a Top Rank card streamed on ESPN+.
