Undefeated Super Middleweights Join World Boxing Super Series
Even though the cruiserweight tournament for the World Boxing Super Series is nearly filled, with several world champions taking part, the super middleweight tournament had been left relatively unchecked, until now.
The super middleweight tournament now has a couple of undefeated boxers to further fill the 168-pound tournament. Tournament organizers announced that Erik Skoglund and Jamie Cox will enter the tournament, which now has three confirmed names in the super middleweight tournament.
Co-promoter Kalle Sauerland said the tournament is excited to have a pair of undefeated boxers join the fray as the World Boxing Super Series continues to try and fulfill its goal of being the best boxing tournament in the world.
“It takes a lot of heart and courage to sign up for the World Boxing Super Series. The quality of their competitors will be beyond anything they have ever experienced in their young careers, but their undefeated record tells us they are ready to take on the world’s best fighters,” Sauerland said.
Already confirmed for the super middleweight tournament is WBA champion George Groves, who had announced he was the first participant more than a week prior to this announcement. Skoglund (26-0, 12 KO) is the current WBA International light heavyweight titleholder while Cox (22-0, 12 KO) is the WBA Continental super middleweight champion.
The draw for each tournament is supposed to take place on a date to be determined in July in Monte Carlo, Monaco. In each weight class, the four top seeds will select their quarterfinal opponent from the four unseeded boxers on a live TV show. The tournaments are supposed to start in September with the quarterfinals. The semifinals are expected to take place in early 2018 and the finals to be held in May 2018. The winner of each will take home the Muhammad Ali Trophy.
