Trainer: Ryan Garcia Wouldn’t Last Two Rounds Against Gervonta Davis
Aside from beating Jayson Velez in the main event of a Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN card on May 4, Ryan Garcia has been in the news making repeated challenges to WBA super featherweight Gervonta Davis and Davis’ trainer is tired of Garcia.
Garcia, an undefeated super featherweight prospect, has been clamoring for a fight against Davis, saying that he isn’t afraid of the two-time world champion. Trainer Kevin Cunningham talked with Boxing Scene about Garcia’s recent shoutouts and said after his performance against Velez, Garcia should focus more on developing his skills and not so much about fighting Davis.
“This kid should never ever mention Gervonta Davis name again,” Cunningham said. “Ryan Garcia wouldn’t make it out of the second round with Tank. The kid needs to stop running his mouth and focus on learning his craft. There’s levels to this sh*t!”
A fight between Garcia and Davis is highly unlikely at this point, with Garcia being only ranked No. 11 in the WBA’s super featherweight rankings. Garcia’s last win over Velez saw him pick up the vacant NABF and WBO-NABO super featherweight titles. His last fight prior to the May 4 bout saw Garcia knock out former world title challenger Fernando Vargas in the first round of their bout in March.
Davis’ future is uncertain after stopping Jesus Cuellar in three rounds to win the WBA “super” super featherweight title on a Showtime-televised card back in April. Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe told Fightful back in March that Davis isn’t afraid to face off against any of the other champions at 130 pounds or against former champion Vasyl Lomachenko.
