Tony Bellew Calls Out Andre Ward For A Fight; Ward Responds
Now that Tony Bellew’s rivalry with David Haye is over with Bellew’s second victory over the former heavyweight champion, Bellew has now set his sights on one former pound-for-pound king.
In a post-fight interview with Sky Sports, which can be seen in the video above, Bellew said he wants to fight for world titles again and fight some of the biggest names in the sport. The biggest name he called out was Andre Ward, who retired last year as the undefeated unified light heavyweight champion. Bellew also called out unified cruiserweight champions Oleksandr Usyk and Murat Gassiev, who are scheduled to fight each other in the World Boxing Super Series finals.
“I need the world title and I need a big, huge name… I need that megastar. Who do you got for me [Eddie Hearn]? You know what guys? How about Andre Ward? Andre Ward, pound-for-pound king. Usyk, Gassiev, Ward. You name them and I just keep beating them, so just give me someone,” Bellew said.
Ward, who entertained the idea of fighting as a heavyweight before retiring, spoke to Fight Hype and said he’s right now focused on his hosting duties for the reboot of the Contender reality show.
“I’ve been blessed. I just got off the set for Creed 2 and now on my way to the set for the Contender. It’s a great opportunity to host that show. i’m focused on that show and I wish Tony nothing but the best,” Ward said.
The former unified champion retired last year after defeating Sergey Kovalev in a rematch from their 2016 first fight on pay-per-view, although did admit back in December that he misses fighting. Bellew has campaigned at light heavyweight, unsuccessfully challenging for the WBO and WBC light heavyweight titles in 2011 and 2013, respectively.
