Tomoki Kameda Wants To Fight For A Super Bantamweight World Title In 2018

Former bantamweight world champion Tomoki Kameda has a rough estimate of when he'll return to the ring and has his sights set on another world title.

Speaking to ESPN Deportes, Kameda talked about wanting to fight some of boxing's super bantamweight champions only to be turned down. Kameda said he hopes to fight either in February or March on a quest to challenge for a super bantamweight world title, something Kameda said tried and failed in 2017.

"I'm working hard in Mexico while I'm waiting for a world title fight since in 2017 we actively searched and called the champions, namely [WBC champion] Rey Vargas, [WBO champion] Jessie Magdaleno and they didn't wish to face me. I've met with my advisor Al Haymon and he said that fights were offered and they said no, so we're waiting on corralling them so that we can have these fights in 2018," Kameda said.

Kameda held the WBO bantamweight title from 2013-2015 and then challenged for the WBA title. Kameda lost to WBA champion Jamie McDonnell in 2015 and then lost a rematch in that same year. Since the two losses to McDonnell, Kameda won his next three fights.

The Japanese star also said his sights are set on all the world champions at 122, including Magdaleno, Vargas, WBA champion Danny Roman, WBA interim champion Moises Flores, WBO interim champion Isaac Dogboe and IBF champion Ryosuke Iwasa. Kameda is ranked in the top 8 of in all four of the main governing bodies' rankings.
