Ted Cheeseman: John Ryder Should Be A World Champion Now, Deserves Canelo Alvarez Fight

Canelo Alvarez is looking for an opponent and after former world title challenger John Ryder threw his hat in the ring, fellow Brit Ted Cheeseman believes Ryder has earned his shot.

Cheeseman recently spoke with Fightful and in that conversation, the topic of Ryder potentially fighting Alvarez was brought up. Cheeseman, like many, felt strongly about the fact that Ryder came up short in a WBA super middleweight title fight against Callum Smith in 2019, a fight that many thought Ryder deserved to win on the scorecards. Cheeseman strongly believes that Ryder has earned a fight against Alvarez and that Ryder should be a world champion by this point.

Since then, Ryder has yet to fight, but has been looking for a big fight, whether it would be a rematch against Smith or against Alvarez. With reports of different names being thrown around as potential opponents for the Mexican star, Ryder went to social media and said he’d be ready to fight Alvarez in September.

“Definitely and I think John has earned his shot. I think everyone knows and every boxing person thinks that John deserved to win that fight against Callum Smith and he showed what level he is. John has had some losses at middleweight and obviously his confidence went down, but once he went to super middleweight, he’s shown his experience and has shown that he is a world-level fighter in the super middleweight division. I think he deserves his shot. He’s paid his dues in boxing. He’s been in the game long enough. He should be world champion now, but he ain’t, but obviously he deserves a shot at Canelo and it doesn’t look like Callum Smith will give him the rematch,” Cheeseman said.

But now Cheeseman has his own big fight to worry about as he is currently preparing to face Sam Eggington on the August 1 Matchroom Boxing card from Brentwood, Essex, England. The fight will headline the first of Matchroom’s Fight Camp series.

The full interview between Cheeseman and myself will be available to watch on July 8 on my YouTube channel, which you can subscribe to at this link.
