Srisaket Sor Rungvisai Retains WBC Title With Decision Win Over Iran Diaz
Srisaket Sor Rungvisai continues his reign as the WBC super flyweight champion with another impressive performance.
Fighting in his native country of Thailand, Sor Rungvisai defeated Mexican challenger Iran Diaz by unanimous decision (119-109, 120-108, 119-109). The fight took place on a card promoted by ONE Championship, which focuses on MMA events and signed Sor Rungvisai to defend his title on the card.
The fight was not very competitive as Sor Rungvisai’s power advantage was evident since the start of the fight. Sor Rungvisai would spend a good portion of the fight working Diaz’s body and although Diaz was able to get a few solid punches in, even seemingly dropping Sor Rungvisai twice throughout the fight, but the referee ruled both supposed knockdown instances caused by slips instead.
After winning the title with a shocking win over Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez in March 2017, Sor Rungvisai retained his title with a knockout win over Gonzalez on HBO’s first-ever “SuperFly” card. Sor Rungvisai then made his second title defense in February with a tough battle against Juan Francisco Estrada.
The fight, a “Fight of the Year” contender, saw Sor Rungvisai barely retain his title with a majority decision win over Estrada. Despite Estrada not winning the title, the fight was close enough for the WBC to order a rematch between the two boxers, but Sor Rungvisai elected to take a stay-busy fight against Young GIl Bae this past summer before fighting Diaz. The WBC has stated that Sor Rungvisai is allowed to make one more voluntary title defense before being ordered to give Estrada his rematch.
