Shawn Porter Wins WBC Silver Welterweight Title In Brooklyn Street Fight
Shawn Porter stayed on course for a potential rematch against unified welterweight champion Keith Thurman, but it didn’t come easy.
Porter defeated Adrian Granados in the co-feature bout on Showtime’s November 4 card at the Barclays Center, winning the WBC Silver Welterweight title in the process. The fight was a complete slugfest from the start, sending the Brooklyn crowd into a frenzy at times. Porter won the title via unanimous decision (117-111, 117-111, 117-111) and Fightful had scored the bout in favor of Porter 117-111.
The fight was wild, with both men abandoning technical boxing in favor a fighting a glorified street fight. The wild fighting did come at a cost as Porter revealed that he had hurt his left wrist about halfway through the fight and when the championship rounds came, Porter was barely able to use his left hand.
After the fight, Porter said he wants to fight Thurman when he first gets the chance.
“We’re gonna rest for about a week and then get back to work. We want Keith Thurman as soon as possible,” Porter said.
As the WBC Silver champion and the mandatory challenger, Porter is first in line to fight Thurman, but Thurman is still recovering from elbow surgery several months ago. Although he is expected to return sometime in early 2018, Thurman told Fightful he highly doubts the first fight back will be against Porter.
Porter has been the mandatory challenger since April when he beat Andre Berto at the Barclays Center. Porter lost the WBA welterweight title to Thurman last year via unanimous decision.
