Sergey Kovalev Releases Statement On Instagram Regarding 2018 Arrest
Sergey Kovalev has taken to social media regarding his 2018 arrest.
In an Instagram post, which can be seen below, Kovalev asked the boxing community to not jump to conclusions regarding the allegations that he allegedly punched a woman last June. Kovalev was arrested in June 2018 and was charged with assault likely to cause great bodily injury and is due back in court in March.
Dear friends, boxing fans and everyone who is up to date with the latest high-profile news, regarding me.
I would like to ask all of you not to make hasty conclusions on the situation in which I am accused and put into the light in a not entirely biased manner. After all, you do not know the details of what happened. For me, this most of all seems to be a performance in which I play the main role by not will.
Doesn’t it seem strange to you that the incident happened in June of last year, and they announced it on the eve of my rematch against Alvarez?
Kovalev was said to have met a woman at a party and after she rejected his advances, he allegedly punched her, which resulted in the woman suffering a broken nose, a concussion and a displaced disk in her neck.
The former world champion is currently preparing for a rematch against Eleider Alvarez on February 2 for the WBO light heavyweight title. The fight will headline a Top Rank Boxing card at The Star in Frisco, Texas and the main card will be streamed on ESPN+.
