Roy Jones Jr. Boxing Promotions CEO Criticizes New Zealand Commission Over Joseph Parker-Alexander Flores Fight
Joseph Parker’s most recent win over Alexander Flores carried some controversy behind it and the company behind Flores’ promotional company.
Roy Jones Jr. Boxing Promotions CEO and Co-Founder Keith Veltre sent out a press release slamming Professional Boxing Commission New Zealand (PBCNZ) over their handling of the fight, which took place on December 15. Veltre accused the commission of not being adequately prepared of assigning referees that can handle big fights such as Parker vs. Flores.
“As excited as we were for Flores to face-off against Parker. We are equally disappointed with Parker’s dirty antics. It was clear that the referee not only favored Parker, but he also lacked enough knowledge to be officiating in the ring. Cleary, though, the New Zealand commission is just as inexperienced with high-caliber fights like this. If it wants to continue pursuing larger fights, then I would suggest it makes sure there is an equal playing field in New Zealand for all foreign fighters.”
Flores also commented on the matter, adding that he believes that the repeated low blows were actually premeditated.
“After reading articles it is clear to me that this was premeditated. When the fight started, the referee clearly stated that we were at belt-line and anything below that would be considered low. I noticed early on that he was hitting me low and I tried to get the referee’s attention. I don’t remember the exact number, but it was consistent whenever we would get inside and exchange,” Flores said.
The fight ended with Parker knocking out Flores in the third round, starting with Parker landing a couple of shots below the belt, finishing with a knockout. Prior to the knockout, Parker had also landed a low blow with his left hand with just seconds remaining in the second round. It was Parker’s first win since beating Hughie Fury in September 2017, snapping a two-fight losing streak.
