Roman Gonzalez vs. Srisaket Sor Rungvisai Rematch Being Planned For September

Top pound-for-pound boxer Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez is being prepped up for a return to the ring in September.

According to K2 Promotions managing director Tom Loeffler, the plan for Gonzalez to have his mandatory rematch against current WBC super flyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in a few months.

“The WBC ordered the rematch, and that’s the fight we’re looking at doing. HBO wants to air that fight. The rematch is the plan but we haven’t finalized an agreement yet, but that’s the plan as of now,” Loeffler said. “We saw the first fight was and it was a tremendous fight. Srisaket rose to the occasion and performed under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden and took advantage of the opportunity, but most people thought Roman won that fight and that’s why the WBC ordered a rematch. So it will be a fight to see if Roman is still a top pound-for-pound fighter or if Srisaket is really the top fighter in that division.”

The first fight between the two of them, which took place on the Gennady Golovkin vs. Daniel Jacobs card on March 18, was a slugfest that ended with Sor Rungvisai winning the title via majority decision (114-112, 114-112, 113-113). The loss marked Gonzalez’s very first defeat as a professional boxer.

The rematch is being targeted for either September 9 or 23 in Southern California, which are the weeks before and after the Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin fight on September 16. Loeffler said another fighter that could be on the card is current WBO super flyweight champion Naoya Inoue.
