Richard Schaefer: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Mikey Garcia Is A PPV Fight
With such a unique matchup that a potential Errol Spence Jr. vs. Mikey Garcia fight is, Richard Schaefer believes the fight can be a pay-per-view fight.
After Garcia unified the WBC and IBF lightweight titles against Robert Easter Jr. on July 28, Garcia said he wants to move up in weight to challenge for Spence’s IBF welterweight title. Both Garcia and Spence publicly said they want to make the fight a reality for later this year and Schaefer addressed the potential fight in front of the media after the fight.
As far as the uniqueness of the fight is concerned, Schaefer called the fight one of the biggest fights that can be made at the moment. The fight is so big that the Ringstar Sports promoter thinks it is a pay-per-view attraction.
“Well, definitely it’s a pay-per-view fight,” Schaefer said. “It’s one of the biggest fights you can make. It’s like a dream matchup, like almost too good to be true. So, you know, definitely pay-per-view. And I do like to, I think for pay-per-view, Las Vegas is the perfect place.”
Schaefer also explained that Dallas, where Spence last fought and is from the area, could also be in play to host the potential dream fight. Schaefer said the success of Spence’s fight against Carlos Adames, which took place at The Star, the Dallas Cowboys’ practice facility, was the reason why Dallas is being considered. Los Angeles is also being considered as a potential host city, according to Schaefer.
While the fight was not specifically said to be a Showtime pay-per-view, Showtime would likely be the network to handle pay-per-view duties due to its history and working relationship with the two fighters. Unlike HBO, Showtime does not do many boxing pay-per-views much less so with fights not involving Floyd Mayweather. The last time Showtime did a boxing pay-per-view was nearly a year ago when he defeated two-time UFC champion Conor McGregor.
