Rey Vargas, Tomoki Kameda Reach Agreement On WBC Super Bantamweight Title Fight
WBC super bantamweight champion Rey Vargas and interim titleholder Tomoki Kameda have reached a deal to have a fight, according to the WBC.
The two sides were set to have a purse bid in the coming days, but the organization received word from promoters Golden Boy Promotions, TGB Promotions and Promociones del Pueblo that a purse bid is no longer needed. No details on when or where the fight will take place were announced, but the WBC announced that all will be revealed in the near future.
Vargas, winner of all 33 pro bouts, has held the WBC title since winning a majority decision against Gavin McDonnell in 2017. Since then, he has made four successful title defenses. Vargas last fought on February 9 in Indio, California where he recovered from a second-round knockdown to win a 12-round decision against Franklin Manzanilla. That fight was streamed on DAZN in the United States.
After Vargas’ May 2018 title defense against Azat Hovhannisyan, he spent the rest of the year recovering from numerous injuries. While Vargas was recovering, the WBC created an interim title with Kameda and Abigail Medina fighting for the belt last November at Korakuen Hall in Japan. Kameda would go on to win the fight by unanimous decision. Kameda has won his last five bouts and was once the WBO bantamweight world champion.
Both Vargas and Kameda are ranked in the top 10 of the Fightful Boxing Rankings at super bantamweight, which can be seen at this link and are updated every week.
