Report: Srisaket Sor Rungvisai vs. Jerwin Ancajas Being Eyed For March
With the super flyweight division catching a wave of momentum in the last couple of years, two of the top champions at 115 pounds are looking to unify their respective titles.
According to a report from Asian Boxing, WBC champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and IBF champion Jerwin Ancajas are looking to fight in a unification bout next spring. The two sides are looking to work out a deal that would have the two fight in March.
No further details on the fight were revealed, but Ancajas is currently promoted by Top Rank, who has a broadcast relationship with ESPN. This would mean that the fight could land on an ESPN platform should the fight get made and with the ESPN+ streaming service, it is likely ESPN will be involved one way or another regardless of the location.
The two champions currently have mandatory challengers: Juan Francisco Estrada as Sor Rungvisai’s mandatory and Ryuichi Funai as Ancajas’ mandatory. In most cases, unification bouts take precedence over mandatory fights, but the unification bouts need to be signed in order to avoid fighting mandatory challengers for the time being.
Sor Rungvisai is coming off a title defense against Iran Diaz on October 6. Ancajas has not fought since successfully defending his title against Alejandro Santiago in a fight that ended in a draw on September 29.
Both Sor Rungvisai and Ancajas had hinted at a potential unification bout for months with the two having a face-off at a One Championship event in Thailand back in October. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum recently spoke on the matter, commenting that the unification fight will in fact take place in 2019.
