Report: Sergey Kovalev Received Low Offer For Canelo Alvarez Fight
An offer to WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev for a potential fight against unified middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez was sent, but deemed too low for the Russian and his promoter.
Per a report from Boxing Scene, Golden Boy Promotions, which promotes Alvarez, sent an offer to Kovalev and his promoter Main Events but it was reported to be less than half of what Daniel Jacobs earned for his May 4 fight against Alvarez. The proposed fight would have Alvarez move up two weight classes to face Kovalev on September 14 on DAZN.
In recent weeks, Kovalev emerged as a potential opponent for Alvarez after talks between Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin for a third fight in September started to stall. The main sticking point in the gradually failing negotiations between the two middleweights is Golovkin’s insistence that the trilogy bout would not take place in Las Vegas, where the first two fights took place.
Kovalev and his camp were certainly willing to listen to Alvarez and his camp about a fight, but after the initial offer was rejected, there’s a strong possibility that Kovalev would likely go forward with a fight against mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde.
As for what is next for Alvarez, the jury is still out on whether or not he would still compete on September 14. Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions, told Mike Coppinger of The Athletic that Alvarez is still planned to fight on that date, likely in Las Vegas, but no opponent was mentioned.
