Pablo Cesar Cano Suffers Injury, Won’t Compete At Canelo vs. Jacobs
The Canelo Alvarez vs. Daniel Jacobs undercard has taken a hit with another boxer going down with an injury.
ESPN Deportes reported that junior welterweight contender Pablo Cesar Cano suffered an injury to his right hand during the final stages of his preparation. Cano was supposed to defend his WBC International Silver junior welterweight title against Michael Perez on the undercard of the May 4 card from Las Vegas.
Cano was coming off a shocking first-round stoppage win over former lightweight champion Jorge Linares back in January in which Linares was dropped three times. Speaking to ESPN, Cano said he is disappointed over not getting to compete on one of the biggest boxing cards of the year.
“It’s a shame. I was really enthusiastic about fighting on this card and demonstrating that I am very close to challenging for a world title. Unfortunately, these things happen and now it’s time to focus on my recovery and returning to the ring,” Cano said.
This is the second known injury involving a fighter competing on this card. David Lemieux suffered an injury earlier this month and had to be taken out of his interim WBA super middleweight title bout against John Ryder which was going to be the show’s co-main event. Not only was Bilal Akkawy announced as Ryder’s new opponent for the fight, but the card had to be reshuffled with a new co-main event of Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Mauricio Herrera.
Fightful will have live coverage of the entire card, headlined by Canelo vs. Jacobs for the unified WBA “Super,” WBC and IBF middleweight titles.
