Report: Oscar De La Hoya Tests Positive For COVID-19, Evander Holyfield Steps In To Face Vitor Belfort
Unfortunate news for Oscar De La Hoya.
According to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, Boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya has tested positive for COVID-19.
The positive test will force him out of his scheduled September 11 bout against former UFC Champion Vitor Belfort.
Belfort will remain in the featured bout of the evening but in steps another Boxing legend as Evander Holyfield will reportedly be De La Hoya’s replacement.
The report goes on to state that it’s possible the California Athletic Commission may not clear Holyfield for the bout and another potential location is already being discussed should Holyfield not receive clearance.
De La Hoya, who says he’s fully vaccinated, posted an updated on Twitter, confirming the news as well as saying he hopes to compete inside the ring before the end of 2021.
Wanted you to hear directly from me that despite being fully vaccinated, I have contracted Covid and am not going to be able to fight next weekend. Preparing for this comeback has been everything to me over the last months, & I want to thank everyone for their tremendous support. pic.twitter.com/0wKEnr5Jzv
