Report: Joseph Diaz Jr. vs. Josh Warrington In The Works For Canelo-GGG PPV Card

The middleweight mega fight between Canelo Alvarez and unified champion Gennady Golovkin doesn’t have a full undercard set, but one fight in the works is a potential WBC featherweight world title eliminator.

According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, there are talks of putting Joseph Diaz Jr. vs. Josh Warrington on the Alvarez vs. Golovkin pay-per-view. The WBC did order the fight and both sides have until August 11 to strike a deal for the fight, or else the fight will undergo a purse bid.

Warrington is penciled in to fight an opponent to be determined on October 21 in his hometown of Leeds, England. He could either wind up facing Diaz on September 16 in Las Vegas or on October 21 in his hometown, depending on if the sides make a deal or who wins the purse bid.

The winner of this fight would then be the mandatory challenger to Gary Russell’s title, who hasn’t fought since stopping Oscar Escandon in the seventh round on a Showtime-televised card back in May.

The only other fights confirmed for the undercard is Diego De La Hoya vs. Randy Caballero in a junior featherweight fight and Antonio Orozco vs. Roberto Ortiz in a junior welterweight fight. Fightful will have complete coverage of Alvarez vs. Golovkin, including live coverage of the card and fight week activities.
