Report: Floyd Mayweather Jr. Paying For George Floyd’s Funeral

Former world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. has reportedly offered to pay for the funeral of George Floyd.

Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who died shortly after Derek Chauvin, a white officer in Minneapolis, arrested him and pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck for several minutes. The video of the incident was caught on camera and posted online.

According to Hollywood Unlocked, Mayweather reached out to the family and offered to pay for Floyd’s funeral. While speaking with Hollywood Unlocked CEO Jason Lee, Mayweather shared that he was distraught after learning Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Mayweather told Jason that he was in a group chat with Anzel Jennings, the CEO of TMT music label, who shared that he actually grew up with Floyd in Houston. Following their conversion, Jennings reached out to the family on Mayweather’s behalf.

The report was then confirmed by Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, who spoke to ESPN this week.

“He’ll probably get mad at me for saying that, but yes, [Mayweather] is definitely paying for the funeral,” Ellerbe said.

TMZ would go on to post a picture of what appears to be a check written by Mayweather worth $88,500 to be sent to Fort Bend Memorial, where the funeral will take place.

Mayweather last fought in the ring in an official capacity back in 2017 when he defeated Conor McGregor in a boxing fight. Since then, Mayweather did compete in an exhibition against Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in December 2018.
