Report: Canelo vs. GGG 3 In Jeopardy; Venue Selection Among Issues During Negotiations
The road to Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin 3 has a hit a couple of speed bumps that could completely derail the highly-anticipated rematch.
According to a report from Chris Mannix states that some issues have risen during negotiations, planned to take place on September 14, which falls on Mexican Independence Day weekend. Among the key sticking points is the location and venue for the trilogy camp.
Mannix reported that Golovkin wants the fight to take place either in New York, where his last fight took place, or in Texas while the Alvarez camp insists on having the third fight take place in Las Vegas, where the two first fights took place. Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Alvarez, is pushing to have a resolution by June 21 or they will start to look at other opponents.
Two names that could be in the running to face Alvarez aside from Golovkin would be current WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade and WBA “Super” super middleweight champion Callum Smith. Andrade is set to defend his middleweight title against Maciej Sulecki on June 29 in Providence, Rhode Island.
The two middleweight stars’ first encounter took place in September 2017 with the bout ending in a controversial split draw. The rematch, which occurred in September 2018, saw Alvarez capture the WBA “Super” and WBC middleweight titles by majority decision. Even with Alvarez winning the rematch, there were plenty of calls for a third fight to happen and demand for another fight seemed to have only increased ever since both men signed exclusive multi-year deals to fight on DAZN.
Alvarez’s two fights on the streaming service saw him defeat Rocky Fielding to capture the WBA “Regular” super middleweight title and Daniel Jacobs to win the IBF middleweight title. Golovkin’s DAZN debut saw him knock out Steve Rolls at Madison Square Garden on June 8. After the fight against Rolls, Golovkin called out Alvarez to come to New York and fight him at the Garden.
