Report: Canelo Alvarez Underwent Knee Surgery In Mexico
With no fight against Gennady Golovkin on May 5 happening, Canelo Alvarez reportedly went back to his hometown of Mexico and had surgery.
According to Mexican news outlet Publimetro, Alvarez underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in a hospital in his hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico. The publication cites a source who said he entered the hospital at around 7 a.m. local time on April 13 and will more than likely stay there until the following day.
Alvarez is still awaiting word on what the final ruling from the Nevada State Athletic Commission will be regarding his suspension for failing two February drug tests. The former junior middleweight champion could be looking at a potential one-year suspension for his two failed tests for traces of clenbuterol, but the suspension could be reduced by as much as six months. Prior to the two failed tests in February, Golden Boy Promotions, who promotes Alvarez, claimed the Mexican superstar has passed his past 13 drug tests.
Whatever suspension Alvarez is dealt, it will be retroactive to the date of the first failed test, which is February 17. The final ruling will be made on April 18.
Alvarez was supposed to face Golovkin on May 5 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight would be a rematch from their September 2017 bout where both boxers fought to to a split draw. Now that the rematch is not possible, Golovkin is currently trying to find a replacement opponent so he can still fight on May 5.
