Promoter: Miguel Berchelt vs. Mickey Roman Being Targeted For May
With a quick knockout win over Maxwell Awuku out of the way, there are no obstacles remaining for Miguel Berchelt and Mickey Roman to fight for the WBC super featherweight title.
Zanfer Promotions promoter Fernando Beltran spoke to ESPN Deportes and said negotiations between the two sides will begin with the hope the two fighters fight for the world title sometime in May.
“I really liked the performance Berchelt gave on [February 10], we gave him the opportunity to accomplish his dream to go back home as world champion and had a marvelous outing. To me, there’s no better super featherweight boxer in the world than him and we will begin negotiations to have this fight take place in May,” Beltran said.
With both men having fought on HBO, the network would be the favorite to broadcast the fight if it happens in the United States. HBO already has a major broadcast on May 5 with the Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 2 pay-per-view.
Roman fought on HBO late last year when he defeated Orlando Salido. That fight was originally going to be an interim WBC super featherweight title fight with the winner being the mandatory challenger to Berchelt’s title. The WBC withdrew its interim title from the fight when HBO made a last-minute decision to make the fight a 10-round bout instead of a 12-round bout, but the WBC still wanted to give Roman mandatory challenger status.
Berchelt retained his title with a third-round knockout win over last-minute replacement Maxwell Awuku in what was Berchelt’s second defense of the title.
