Oscar De La Hoya Looking To Negotiate Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 3

Oscar De La Hoya announced that he is taking the necessary steps to secure a third fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.

De La Hoya, the founder of Golden Boy Promotions, the company that promotes Alvarez, announced on Twitter that he is sending company president Eric Gomez to start serious negotiations for a trilogy fight. This comes hours after De La Hoya went to ESPN 97.5 Houston and revealed that there had been preliminary discussions about making the fight possible.

The declaration on Twitter adds another page to the tale of Golovkin’s free agency. After Golovkin and Alvarez had their second fight back in September 2018, both middleweight stars’ contract with HBO expired. Alvarez signed a historic 11-fight deal with DAZN while Golovkin is still fielding offers from a number of companies, DAZN included.

A potential third fight between the two boxers would mean Golovkin signs with DAZN, at least for the one fight against Alvarez. Golovkin is currently the sport’s biggest television free agent with PBC, who is aligned with Fox and Showtime, and Top Rank, who signed a broadcast deal with ESPN, targeting Golovkin to be their next top signing. DAZN, who already has broadcast deals with Golden Boy Promotions and Matchroom Boxing, is also actively trying to sign Golovkin to its already impressive stable of middleweights including Alvarez, Demetrius Andrade and David Lemieux.

Golden Boy Promotions reserved T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for a DAZN card on May 4, 2019, which is “Cinco De Mayo” weekend, a big weekend for boxing. The original reservation that appeared on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s website also said GGG Promotions was involved shortly before it got changed to only mention Golden Boy Promotions.

The first fight between the two superstars took place in September 2017 and ended in a controversial draw. The rematch saw Alvarez win by majority decision, capturing Golovkin’s WBA “Super,” WBC and Ring Magazine middleweight world titles.
