One Dead, Two Injured In Bray Boxing Club Shooting

A shooting at a boxing club in Ireland has left one person dead and two critically injured, including Pete Taylor, father of unified women’s lightweight champion Katie Taylor.

The shooting occurred early in the morning of July 5 at the Bray Boxing Club in Ireland just as a gym session was about to start.

According to ESPN, a 50-year-old man died at the scene with two other being injured from the shooting. The two people who were injured are in a hospital and receiving treatment. The other person injured in the shooting was a 35-year-old man. It is believed that none of their injuries are life threatening. An Garda Suíochána, the Irish police, told ESPN that one fatality occurred in the incident at 6:55 a.m. Garda Superintendent Pat Ward said the gunman came in with a firearm and opened fire and left the scene.

"There were about 15-20 people in the gym. They were just about to start their session when a gunman came in carrying a firearm, we believe it was a handgun, and he started opening fire. Three people received gunshot wounds… We know that the gunman left the scene in a silver Volkswagen Caddy," Ward said, adding that they don’t know if the shooter had a specific motive.

Katie Taylor, the unified WBA and IBF women’s lightweight champion is currently training in the United States. Katie began her career at the Bray Boxing Club which was founded by Peter. Katie would then go on to win a gold medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
