Olympic Boxer Anthony Ogogo Tries His Hand In The Pro-Wrestling Ring

The English pro-boxer steps into a pro-wrestling ring and holds his own.

Anthony Ogogo, who is an Olympic boxer from Lowestoft, England, stepped into the pro-wrestling world during a recent W.A.W. show in Norwich. WAW is run by WWE star Paige‘s father, Ricky Knight. Ogogo is apparently a life long wrestling fan and the 12-1 boxer discussed his experience in the ring with Metro.co.uk.

“It all came about because I’m mates with the Knight family in Norwich. For a wedding present, my best man got me an hour training session with Paige’s brother and cousin. They know how much I love wrestling as a fan and asked if I’d want to get involved in one of their shows. As super fan, it was a pleasure.”

After earning a Bronze medal in London in 2012 and continuing his undefeated streak, the unfortunate bug came and bit Ogogo. In 2016, Ogogo had a bout against Craig Cunningham and he was hit with a devastating blow that fractured his left eye socket in several places. Although getting into the ring was a great experience for the Olympian, his sights are set on returning to the boxing ring and becoming World Champion.

“Wrestling is something I really enjoy as a fan and I loved getting involved on Saturday night. But for the time being, my obsession is getting back in the boxing ring after numerous, serious injuries and becoming world champion”. He was then asked about a possible future after boxing and pro-wrestling isn’t out of the question. “After that it’s definitely something that I’d be up for doing.”

Ogogo came out to the ring and threw a few punches and then paid homage to The Rock and Eddie Guerrero, by hitting a “Rock Bottom” and a “Frog Splash” .

“Other than the messing around six months ago there was no training. I say messing around because despite the trainers best efforts to teach us the fundamentals, all we wanted to do was moves on each other. I’d never got on to the top rope before doing the Frog Splash I did and the only reason I was able to do that and the Rock Bottom was because of the thousands of hours I’ve watched wrestling in my life. I was actually meant to be a special guest referee, but they asked if I’d fancy doing a run in and that was right down my street.”

Anthony Ogogo went from 11-0, to suffering an injury that has kept him out of action until present day. The talented boxer looks to put his injury behind him, move forward and climb the boxing ranks once again.
