Nathan Cleverly Wins WBA Light Heavyweight Title
After an entertaining six rounds, former WBA Light Heavyweight Champion Juergen Braehmer said he dislocated his elbow and thus, Nathan Cleverly is the new champion.
In front of a lively German crowd on October 1, Braehmer was starting to outbox Cleverly in rounds 4-6. But at some point in the fight, most likely in the sixth round, Braehmer dislocated his elbow and in between rounds, said that he could not continue to fight.
Cleverly said that he is grateful that Braehmer had given him the chance to compete for a world title. Cleverly lost 2 of his last 3 fights before hand and said that it is time for younger fighters like Cleverly to take charge of the division.
"I'm grateful for this," Cleverly said. "I needed this win."
Despite the lackluster ending, Cleverly said that he will have a rematch against Braehmer since the two fighters had a rematch in their fight contracts.
The 29-year-old champion was a former WBO champion, but lost it to current light heavyweight king Sergey Kovalev. Speaking of Kovalev, now the WBA (Undisputed), IBF and WBO (Super) light heavyweight champion, it had been reported that the winner of this fight would compete against the winner of the Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward fight on November 19.
Braehmer had been champion since 2013 and had not lost a fight since 2008. He had been riding a 17-fight win streak since his prior loss and now there is no telling how long will he be out with that dislocated elbow.
