Nassau Coliseum To Hold PBC Card In July

Nassau Colosseum will have boxing for the first time since 1986 when Premier Boxing Champions hosts a card there later in the summer.

Former world champions Robert Guerrero and Omar Figueroa will headline a PBC on FOX card on July 15. The fight will main event a televised tripleheader that begins at 8 p.m. ET and it will also be simulcast in Spanish on Fox Deportes.

Lou DiBella, who is promoting the card, told ESPN it's been a long time coming for boxing to return to Long Island

"Boxing's grand return to Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum is going to be wall-to-wall action," DiBella said. "The main event between Omar Figueroa and Robert Guerrero is destined to be a bloody slugfest. As a Long Islander, I am proud to promote the first fight card at Nassau Coliseum in 31 years."

The building, which was also home to the NHL's New York Islanders, reopened in April after undergoing a $170 million renovation. Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment, the company that runs Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, also runs the Nassau Coliseum and aims to have regular fights there too. The Barclays Center has been a major venue for world title fights in the past couple of years, holding three major cards there in 2017 alone. The original plan for Nassau Coliseum is to have a boxing card on April 29, but was ultimately pushed back for July.

Figueroa is undefeated as a professional boxer, going 26-0-1, but has not fought since late 2015 when he defeated Antonio DeMarco via unanimous decision. Guerrero's career had been trending downward, losing four out of his last six fights. Guerrero fought for the WBC welterweight title but lost to Danny Garcia on January 2016.
