Mikey Garcia Signs Promotional Deal With Matchroom Boxing, To Fight On DAZN Card On February 29

Mikey Garcia is coming to Matchroom Boxing in 2020.

First reported by Mike Coppinger of The Athletic, it has been announced that Garcia signed a one-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing and will make his promotional debut in the main event of a DAZN card on February 29.

As far as any further details regarding the fight, event or the deal Garcia, nothing has been set in stone, but it was also reported by Coppinger that Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn does have the right to match any offer for Garcia’s next fight after that February 29 bout.

Garcia, who has held titles at featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight and junior welterweight, was unsuccessful in becoming the latest boxer to win a title in five different weight classes when he dropped a 12-round decision to IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. in March. Spence dominated the bout, winning every single round to retain the title in the main event of a PBC on FOX pay-per-view.

Since then, Garcia would go on to vacate the WBC lightweight title that he held prior to the bout against Spence due to Garcia admitting that he won’t be able to make the drop from welterweight to lightweight from one fight to the next. The WBC lightweight title has since then been won by Vasiliy Lomachenko and then handed off to Devin Haney when Lomachenko was named WBC Franchise Champion. That belt now sits vacant after Haney’s current injury will not allow him to fight mandatory challenger Javier Fortuna in the coming weeks.

The 32-year-old Garcia had regularly fought on PBC events before he signed with Matchroom Boxing, headlining multiple Showtime broadcasts against the likes of Adrien Broner, Robert Easter Jr. and Sergey Lipinets.
