Miguel Cotto: No Time To Think About Mayweather vs. McGregor
While Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor are busy clashing on pay-pay-view, Miguel Cotto is ready to win another world title about 300 miles from the T-Mobile Arena roughly the same time.
Cotto will be facing Yoshihiro Kamegai for the vacant WBO junior middleweight championship on HBO in the middle of the Mayweather vs. McGregor pay-per-view on August 26.
Cotto has been steadfast in his focus on winning the world title and ending his career with a bang. In a recent conference call, Cotto said he doesn’t really give the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight much thought with his title bout fast approaching.
“I arrived here in L.A. at the beginning of July to start my training time,” Cotto said. “I’ve only come here with one thing on my mind, and that’s just getting ready for Kamegai. And I’ve been doing a great job here in L.A., and I have no time and no space in my mind to think about another thing, you know? I’m just ready for Kamegai. I’m just thinking about the Kamegai fight, and whatever and whoever has another fight on the same day, they have to think about their fight.”
The Puerto Rican boxing star does have history with Mayweather as Cotto lost to Mayweather in 2012 when the two of them fought for the WBA junior middleweight title.
Cotto vs. Kamegai headlines that HBO card with the WBC super bantamweight title fight between champion Rey Vargas and Ronny Rios serving as the co-main event. Cotto will be fighting for the first time since November 2015 when he lost his middleweight world title to Canelo Alvarez.
