Michael Hunter Signs Promotional Deal With Matchroom Boxing
Heavyweight contender Michael Hunter has taken the next step in his boxing career and has signed a promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing.
The announcement was made official with the additional news that Hunter’s next fight will take place on May 25 in Maryland. Hunter’s opponent will be announced shortly but the bout will take place on the undercard of former undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight debut when he takes on Carlos Takam.
Hunter has been on a four-fight win streak since his lone loss in the pro ranks in 2017. After finding success as a heavyweight during this win streak, Hunter is now looking to challenge for a world title.
“I have proved already that I can be a force at heavyweight with four wins since moving up a year ago, and I feel ready to test myself against the world title contenders to prove that I can win a world title. There are some great fights out there to be made and I am prepared to take on anyone,” Hunter said in a press release.
Ever since Hunter unsuccessfully challenged for Usyk’s WBO cruiserweight title in 2017, he has made the transition to heavyweight where he has emerged as a rising contender. The once-beaten Hunter has won the IBO Intercontinental and WBA International heavyweight titles during this win streak and is ranked in the top 15 by both the WBA and IBF.
The May 25 card from the MGM National Harbor will be streamed on DAZN. Not only are Usyk and Hunter competing on the card, but Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn also said unbeaten contender Filip Hrgovic will also have a fight on the undercard.
