Michael Hunter To Face Fabio Maldonado On May 25
Heavyweight contender Michael Hunter has his next fight announced for the May 25 Matchroom Boxing on DAZN card.
The once-beaten Hunter will take on Brazilian heavyweight Fabio Maldonado on the undercard of the Devin Haney vs. Antonio Moran fight that will headline the show from the MGM National Harbor in Maryland.
Hunter once challenged for the WBO cruiserweight world title in 2017 when he lost a 12-round decision to Oleksandr Usyk. Since then, Hunter moved up to heavyweight, where he has won his last four fights with three of them coming from inside the distance. Currently holding the WBA International heavyweight title, Hunter is ranked No. 12 by the WBA and No. 11 by the IBF. The 30-year-old Hunter was strongly considered to be Anthony Joshua’s replacement opponent for the June 1 Madison Square Garden card after Jarrell Miller failed multiple drug tests until Andy Ruiz Jr. landed the spot as Joshua’s opponent.
Maldonado has fought professionally in MMA and boxing for years, spending several years in UFC where he has faced the likes of Stipe Miocic and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson among other notable names. Inside the boxing ring, Maldonado won his first 26 pro bouts, 25 of which were by knockout, but has lost his last two fights. Maldonado’s most recent fight took place on March when he lost to Oleksandr Teslenko in an NABF heavyweight title bout.
The card will also feature a WBA and WBC junior welterweight title unification between Jessica McCaskill and Anahi Esther Sanchez. Also on the card is a heavyweight bout between Filip Hrgovic and Gregory Corbin and highly-touted prospect Otha Jones III fighting in his second pro bout.
