Mauricio Sulaiman Says WBC Will Address Deontay Wilder’s Comments
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has given his take on recent controversial comments made from WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.
During fight week, Wilder was being interviewed by media at a media workout and made the following comments ahead of his fight against Dominic Breazeale on May 18 at the Barclays Center.
“Hey Dominic Breazeale asked for this,” Wilder said. “I didn’t go seek him. He [sought] me, so if it comes, it comes. This is a brutal sport. We don’t ask to be hit in the face, but we does anyway and you can ask any doctor around the world and he’ll tell you the head is not meant to be hit. This is the only sport where you can kill a man and get paid for it at the same time. It’s legal, so why not use my right to do so? His life is on the line for this fight and I do mean his life. I’m still trying to get me a body on my record.”
On May 16, Sulaiman went on Twitter to publicly denounce Wilder’s comments and that the WBC will address them in a hearing.
I have seen Deontay Wilder comments which are regrettable and completely against the spirit of our sport. I have known Wilder for a long time and he is not the person he portrays in such comments. His metaphors are against the WBC code of ethics and will be addressed in a hearing

The feud between Wilder and Breazeale has been one dating back to years ago and Wilder even told Fightful in a recent media call that this fight is more personal to him than in previous fights. The two are set to face off for the WBC title in the main event of a Showtime-televised card. Fightful will have live coverage of the card, which includes a WBC featherweight title bout between Gary Russell Jr. and Kiko Martinez.
