Luis Nery Signs With PBC, Next Fight In March
Top bantamweight Luis Nery has signed with Premier Boxing Champions.
The former world champion announced that he has signed a five-fight deal with the company and his first fight under the PBC banner has been set. Nery will fight on the undercard of the March 16 PBC card at AT&T Stadium.
Nery previously held the WBC bantamweight title, but was stripped of the belt right before a title defense in early 2018 against Shinsuke Yamanaka. Nery came into the fight massively overweight and was also suspended by WBC much later in the year, but also was a given a lifetime ban from boxing professionally in Japan by the Japanese Boxing Commission.
Since getting stripped of the title and completing a suspension, Nery had only fought twice, both of which were wins coming inside the distance. Nery won the WBC Silver title in October with a third-round knockout win over Jason Canoy and then stopped Renson Robles in the seventh round of their bout this past December.
The WBC title remained vacant for the majority of 2018 and after multiple delays in getting a new champion, an interim title was created which was won by Takuma Inoue on December 30. Nordine Oubaali recently defeated Rau’Shee Warren to win the vacant world title on January 19.
The March 16 card is scheduled to be a pay-per-view event headlined by Errol Spence Jr. vs. Mikey Garcia for the IBF welterweight title. David Benavidez and J’Leon Love are reportedly fighting in the co-main event.
