Liam Smith Signs Promotional Deal With Matchroom Boxing, Next Fight Set

Liam Smith has split with promoter Frank Warren and has signed with rival promoter Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing.

The former junior middleweight champion has signed a multi-fight deal to fight for Matchroom Boxing, giving Hearn another top fighter to add to his stable that already includes the likes of Anthony Joshua, Kal Yafai, Katie Taylor and Amir Khan. Smith’s first fight under the new deal will take place on March 30 at a Matchroom Boxing card in Liverpool, England.

The roster of fighters also includes former welterweight champion Kell Brook, who is currently campaigning as a junior middleweight since losing his IBF title to Errol Spence Jr. in 2017. Although Smith is aiming for another shot at a world title, he did say he would be open to fighting Brook, but it’s not his main priority.

“I’ve always had a good relationship with Eddie and I’m happy to be working with him. The Kell Brook fight is a big fight and it’s one that could come into play but I haven’t signed with Matchroom just to fight Brook. I’ve signed with Matchroom to try and become a World Champion again and I believe that Eddie’s the man to take me there,” Smith said.

Smith has not fought since losing to WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia this past summer on an HBO card in Las Vegas. Smith held the WBO title from 2015 to 2016 when he lost the belt to Canelo Alvarez. No opponent has been set for Smith’s next fight but the March 30 event will be streamed on DAZN, per a press release from Matchroom that announced Smith’s signing.
