Leo Santa Cruz Said He Still Wants To Unify Featherweight Division
Leo Santa Cruz’s goal to unify the featherweight division may have some people thinking that he’s overlooking his next opponent, but Santa Cruz rejects such a notion.
During a recent press conference to talk about his upcoming WBA “Super” featherweight title defense, Santa Cruz said he still has title unification aspirations after fighting Miguel Flores. The two are set to fight on February 16 in Los Angeles in what is Santa Cruz’s third title defense in this second reign as the WBA 126-pound world champion.
After fighting the likes of Carl Frampton and Abner Mares, fighting Miguel Flores has many believing that it is an easy win for Santa Cruz, but the Mexican champion said he’s training just as hard for this fight as with any other fight.
“When I say that I want to unify the featherweight division, I’m not looking past Miguel Flores. I have to be positive and always look toward the future. I’m not looking back. I’m just training hard to get that win and become the best at 126-pounds. First that means beating Miguel Flores,” Santa Cruz said.
It’s no surprise that Santa Cruz had sought fights with his fellow featherweight champions, even hinting at a possible fight against WBC titleholder Gary Russell Jr. That fight never materialized, but Santa Cruz remains adamant that his goal this year is to unify.
“I want to unify against any of the champions. I want any of the champions in 2019 and I want to become the featherweight king,” Santa Cruz said.
The fight between Santa Cruz and Flores will headline a PBC on Fox broadcast from the Microsoft Theater at L.A. Live. Also on the card is a fight between Omar Figueroa and John Molina Jr.
