Katie Taylor vs. Delfine Persoon Being Eyed For June 1

After Katie Taylor added the WBO Female lightweight title to her collection, she said she has set her eyes to becoming the undisputed champion of the division in her next fight.

Well, if you ask promoter Eddie Hearn if we’ll get to see Taylor get that opportunity and face WBC champion Delfine Persoon, Hearn answered in the affirmative. In an interview with Sky Sports Boxing, Hearn said he is targeting a fight between Taylor, who also owns the WBA and IBF titles, and Persoon to crown the first-ever undisputed women’s champion at lightweight.

When asked about a target date and location for the fight, Hearn said the fight could take place on June 1 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

“June the 1st at Madison Square Garden on the Joshua card what better setting for the undisputed lightweight title. Katie has got the WBO, WBA and IBF. Persoon has the WBC, The Ring magazine which will also be on the line for that fight, it’s everything for Katie,” Hearn said.

Taylor has been on a roll winning major fights with relative ease. A former Olympic gold medalist, Taylor entered the pro ranks with a lot of promise and has delivered on her lofty expectations, winning the WBA title in her seventh fight back in 2017. Since then, she has defended the WBA title six times, winning the IBF title in the process and in her last fight, she stopped Rose Volante to unify the WBO title with her two other world titles.

The June 1 card that Hearn mentioned was the Matchroom Boxing show that will be streamed on DAZN in the United States. The main event of that card will be Anthony Joshua vs. Jarrell Miller for the unified WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles.
