Kal Yafai To Face Norbelto Jimenez For WBA Super Flyweight Title On June 29
A second world title bout has been added to a Matchroom Boxing card taking place later this month.
Matchroom Boxing announced that WBA super flyweight champion Yafai will defend his title against mandatory challenger Norbelto Jimenez on June 29. The fight will be part of a DAZN card taking place at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island.
The British champion has held the WBA title since 2016 when he defeated Luis Concepcion. As the WBA’s 115-pound champion, Yafai has made four title defenses and his most recent one took place last November on a Matchroom Boxing card in Monte Carlo, defeating Israel Gonzalez by unanimous decision. This will be Yafai’s second title defense in the United States with the first one taking place in May 2018 when he stopped David Carmona after seven rounds.
Jimenez’s career started off poorly as he had a pro record of 2-8-1 in his first 11 fights. Since then, Jimenez would go on to remain unbeaten in his next 30 fights, winning a number of regional titles during that span. Jimenez once challenged for the WBA super flyweight title in 2014, but fought then-champion Kohei Kono to a split draw, meaning Kono retained his title.
The card will be headlined by a WBO middleweight title defense by Demetrius Andrade, taking on WBO International titleholder Maciej Sulecki in a homecoming fight for Andrade. Also on the card is the return of former WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker, fighting for the first time since signing a multi-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing. Parker will take on former world title challenger Eric Molina.
