Kal Yafai Drops David Carmona Four Times On ESPN+ After Carmona Misses Weight

Kal Yafai may be well on his way to getting a super flyweight world title unification bout after defeating David Carmona.

Yafai, the WBA super flyweight world title, dominated challenger David Carmona until Carmona’s corner stopped the fight in the seventh round after dropping Carmona four times in the fight. Yafai’s bout against Carmona served as the co-main event of a Top Rank Boxing card on ESPN+.

The fight carried some controversy from the day before. Carmona came in more than three pounds over the 115-pound super flyweight limit and was no longer able to win the world title. The fight did go on, but as a non-world title bout.

Yafai began the fight on fire, knocking down Carmona in the first round. But Carmona did manage to bounce back for a moment after the knockdown by hitting Yafai with a strong left hand that stunned the champion. But Yafai was able to recover and continue dominating the fight. Yafai dropped Carmona once more in the fourth round and twice in the fifth round. Carmona’s corner didn’t think the challenger could continue and stopped the fight following the seventh round. The fight was Carmona’s fourth loss in his last five fights, which also includes a loss to former WBO super flyweight champion Naoya Inoue.

The undefeated Yafai made his U.S. debut in that fight and now could be looking at a title unification bout against IBF champion Jerwin Ancajas, who headlined the card with a wide unanimous decision win over Jonas Sultan.
