Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Alfredo Angulo Canceled; Fight Added To Wilder vs. Fury Undercard

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.‘s return to action has officially been delayed.

Showtime announced in a press release that Chavez’s fight against Alfredo Angulo on December 1 has been canceled. The fight was supposed to take place on a Showtime-televised card that served as the lead-in to the Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury pay-per-view.

According to the press release, the fight is off because “Chavez’s father, Julio, Sr., and his team didn’t believe Chavez Jr. was ready to return to the ring. Chavez, Jr. will return at some time in the future. Angulo will still appear in a bout on the undercard.” It has been nearly two years since Chavez fought with his last fight taking place in May 2017 when he lost to Canelo Alvarez. It was previously reported that Chavez missed a commission-ordered medical appointment, which put the fight in jeopardy.

As a result of the fight not taking place, another match was added to the card in Los Angeles: a bout between top junior middleweight contender Julian Williams and Javier Francisco Castro. Williams is on a three-fight win streak since losing to Jermall Charlo in an IBF junior middleweight title fight. Castro, on the other hand, has not fought since May 2017. Before that May 2017 fight, Castro did not fight for two-and-a-half years after suffering four straight losses.

With Chavez vs. Angulo no longer happening, the Showtime card only has one fight scheduled before the pay-per-view. That fight is taking place in Canada and is a WBC light heavyweight title fight between Adonis Stevenson and Oleksandr Gvozdyk.

Fightful will have live coverage of the entire event as well as a post-fight podcast. Fightful spoke to both Wilder and Fury about their heavyweight title fight and interview articles can be read in the “Exclusives” tab at this link.
