Jermall Charlo vs. Matt Korobov Peaks At 2.4 Million Viewers
PBC’s latest boxing card on Fox, the first in a new era for the boxing company, drew one of the highest viewership number of 2018.
The entire telecast from December 22, headlined by an interim WBC middleweight title fight between Jermall Charlo and Matt Korobov at the Barclays Center, averaged 1.971 viewers. In addition to the viewership on Fox, Fox Deportes and Fox’s streaming platforms viewership numbers totaled 2,114,184 viewers. The main event saw Charlo retain his title with a unanimous decision win over Korobov and peaked at 2.421 million viewers.
The event was the second-most watched boxing telecast in the United States for 2018. The most-watched boxing card was the October 13 Top Rank on ESPN show from Omaha, Nebraska that saw Terence Crawford retain his WBO welterweight title against Jose Benavidez Jr.
The co-main event of the Barclays Center show saw Tony Harrison defeat Jermell Charlo to win the WBC junior middleweight title. The opening fight on the card featured Dominic Breazeale knocking out Carlos Negron in a heavyweight bout.
Viewership for the December 22 card was also significantly higher than Fox’s previous card, which took place on August 4. That show was headlined by Andre Berto vs. Devon Alexander in a welterweight bout and that fight peaked at 1,266,000 viewers. The entire four-bout broadcast averaged 941,000 viewers overall.
Fox’s next boxing card will take place on January 26, 2019 and that card will feature WBA “super” welterweight champion Keith Thurman defending his title against Josesito Lopez. It is the first of 10 boxing cards that Fox announced will air in 2019 to go along with the 11 boxing cards on Fox Sports 1 a Fox pay-per-view card in March 2019.
